In this blog I want to share you about Development Stage for Learners.
The first discussion we will do is to know what a young learner is, a student development stage, and the last one is the optimal age for learning a foreign language. So let's just discuss all the material that we discussed.
DEFINITION OF YOUNG LEARNERS
From what I read and I conclude the definition of young learners is a term used for children from the first year of school-aged 5- 7 years until they are at the stage of letting go of children aged 11-12 years, or when they continue their schooling they continue from primary school to the first school.
STUDENTS 'DEVELOPMENT STAGES
The development of humans from one stage to the next is determined by their success or failure in taking the previous stage. The division of these stages is based on a certain period in human life:
1. Infants (0-1 years)
2. Toddlers (2-3 years)
3. Pre-school (3-6 years)
4. School-age (7-12 years)
5. Teenagers (12-18 years)
6. Youth (in their 20s)
7.Middle-aged (the late 20s to 50s)
8. Seniors (age 50s and beyond)
The development stage of students is very important to understand in carrying out the learning process. Either in our family as parents or in our capacity as an educator. In the book "Managing intelligence in learning" Hamzah B.Uno and Masri Kuadrat divide the stages of development of students consisting of:
1. The first stage is called the motor-sensory period (about 0-2 years). At this stage the child (baby) uses sensory organs and motor skills to understand the world around him.
2. The pre-operational stage (ages 2-7 years). At this stage the ability of the cognitive schema is still limited. Learners like to imitate other people's behavior. The behavior that is imitated is especially the behavior of other people (especially parents and teachers) that he has seen when that person responds to the behavior of people, conditions, and events that have been encountered in the past. Learners begin to be able to use correct words and express short sentences effectively.
3. Concrete operational stage (ages 7-11 years). At this stage students have begun to understand the cumulative aspects of the material, such as volume and quantity, can understand how to combine several groups of objects with varying levels. Also, students can think systematically about concrete objects and events.
4. Formal operational stage (ages 11-15 years). At this stage, students are already in their teens. The cognitive development of students at this stage can coordinate two cognitive types, either simultaneously (simultaneously) or sequentially. For example, the capacity to formulate hypotheses (basic assumptions) learners can think about solving problems with the environment to which they respond.
OPTIMAL AGE FOR LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
I conclude the age suitable for children learning foreign languages.
In teaching foreign languages to our children, we have stages when teaching them, because, at the age of children who are still active around 0-6 years old, children have high curiosity, and are easily bored with activities that are too monotonous.
The golden age (0-6 years) is a time when children's language development progresses rapidly. And for children to understand foreign languages, usually children can understand and quickly grasp around the age of 3-4 years. so that when children have this ability, the abilities that children have look more natural to learn so that introducing foreign languages at this age will be the best decision. So when we teach a foreign language the children will be easily attracted to the learning, but we also have to be careful when teaching children because children get bored easily, make the learning we teach more interesting, such as watching videos, playing games, singing and dancing.
